In Memory of SSgt. David H. Stewart, USMC
Friends and Family,
On April 17, 2017, I will run the Boston Marathon in support of the Marine Corps Law Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF) in memory of Staff Sergeant David H. Stewart, United States Marine Corps, who was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan on June 20, 2014. Days before his death, Staff Sergeant Stewart and his platoon selflessly responded to my request for assistance after my platoon lost two vehicles to improvised explosive devices while patrolling through an area with a well-established and very hostile enemy presence. Without their reinforcement, we were exposed and extremely vulnerable. However, because of Dave’s selfless leadership and dedication to duty, every Marine returned to base that long April day. Sadly, several days later, Staff Sergeant Stewart, Lance Corporal Adam R. Wolff, and Lance Corporal Brandon J. Garabrant made the ultimate sacrifice.
Brandon and Adam were 19 and 25, respectively. Dave was 34, and on his fifth combat deployment. At the time, he left behind a wife, Kristine, and two children. Their daughter Mackenzie was just two years old and their son Marshall was 14 months, and today, is the spitting image of his dad.
Within 72 hours of Dave being killed, his family was contacted by the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation (MC-LEF) to offer assistance in any way possible. MC-LEF is a foundation which provides scholarships to the children of fallen United States Marines and Federal Law Enforcement Officers (FLEO).
Recently, Dave’s wife Kristine described to me how quickly MC-LEF had contacted them to offer assistance and how much it meant to her. Kristine said it was just incredible to have someone from the foundation call her and tell her that her children’s college tuition was taken care of. Kristine added, “It was such a great relief to have while living in the midst of such sadness and uncertainty about the future.”
Since its founding in 1995, MC-LEF has awarded over $70 million in scholarships, supporting over 3,800 children. Thanks to generous donors, like you, MC-LEF is currently able to provide a scholarship account for every child who loses a parent serving in the United States Marine Corps or any FLEO.
I ask each of you to consider donating to MC-LEF, so that spouses like Kristine and children like Mackenzie and Marshall can continue to receive support in their time of need. When Marines leave for combat, they don’t always come home. We owe it to them to take care of the families that they leave behind.
